Taipei, Taiwan, May 16, 2019 – QNAP® Systems, Inc. today released the QES (QNAP Enterprise Storage) 2.1.0 operating system, which includes new features such as: QNAP’s exclusive Write Coalescing algorithm to optimize all-flash performance in ZFS, software-defined SSD optimization, inline compaction, iSER support, and other advanced technologies. Demonstrating strengths in high performance, data protection, data reduction, virtualization, and the compatibility with OpenStack® cloud environments, QES 2.1.0 delivers a cost-effective, flash-optimized storage solution for enterprise data centers and VDI environments.

“Enterprise demand for all-flash storage remains strong due to requirements for maximized IOPS with minimal I/O latency,” said Joe Chao, Product Manager of QNAP, adding “QES 2.1.0 is focused on unleashing the performance potential of all-flash storage, and helps organizations tackle performance bottlenecks of mission-critical applications such as data centers, virtualizations, and VDI.”

QES is based on the FreeBSD kernel and uses ZFS. In QES 2.1.0 the new Write Coalescing algorithm drives a performance boost, which in QNAP testing led to a 400% random write performance boost for the all-flash TES-3085U NAS. Support for software-defined over-provisioning allows users to allocate additional over-provisioning space to SSDs and Storage Pools to prevent performance degradation caused by write amplification, while also benefiting the lifespan of SSDs.

Besides reinforcing QES' existing inline data deduplication and inline data compression, QES 2.1.0 aggressively achieves greater space saving by supporting advanced inline data compaction techniques - which is especially useful when highly-repetitive data or massive small files (such as transaction logs of banks or e-commerce) are generated.

QES 2.1.0 not only excels in performance but also supports numerous ZFS-based data protection and disaster recovery features, including end-to-end checksums to detect and correct silent data corruption, near-unlimited snapshots for iSCSI LUN and shared folders, and SnapSync to accelerate remote backups. QES-based QNAP NAS supports VMware®, Microsoft® and Citrix® virtualization, and the SnapSync also supports VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to offer enterprise-class remote backup & disaster recovery solution for virtual applications. The upgraded QES 2.1.0 adds supports for iSER to optimize VMware performance, and for OpenStack Cinder and Manila file sharing services, providing businesses with a flexible, easy-to-use, and low-cost storage solution for OpenStack environments.

Availability & Compatibility

QES 2.1.0 is available from the Download Center for the enterprise-class TES-3085U, TES-1885U and ES1640dc v2 NAS systems. For more information, please visit https://www.qnap.com/qes/2.1.0/.
